Let's Make School a Place Where all Types of Learners Can Succeed 2021.
The Issue
Teachers tend to administer only one method of teaching in classrooms and that's through long and exhausting lectures that occupy nearly 7 hours of our day. This works for some students, but research shows that something is extremely wrong here.
The research tells us that 65% of the general population are visual learners (those who learn by seeing), 30% are auditory learners (those who learn by hearing) and 5% are kinesthetic learners (those who learn by moving/touching), yet us students still have to learn in an environment where teachers nurture only one method of learning (not all teachers or course but too many to be comfortable with). This would work in favor of the auditory learners, but that's only around 30% of the general population. The rest learn at a disadvantage, hindering their chance of competing in a very competitive school system.
So what am I asking for? A reform in the ways we teach our students. Studies demonstrate that when teachers prepare their lessons, assignments, and assessments with the consideration of the different personality traits and learning styles of their students, they experience benefits. Students become more engaged in class, perform better academically, and have fewer behavioral problems. Let's ditch the method of lecturing every day and let's accommodate all types of learners in the best way possible. Obviously, we won't be able to achieve this perfectly, but let's do something rather than nothing. Meaning let's run activities once a week in science class so that the kinesthetic learners can benefit, let's run debates in social studies class more often for the auditory learners, let's do writing practices for the reading writing learners. The great thing about this is that students only have a "best" way to learn not an "only" way to learn. So I'm not saying let's leave students behind on certain class activities, I'm saying let's just make it so that every student has the chance to experience their prime way of learning.
Let's do this through curriculum change and giving teachers more autonomy to express their creativity. The benefits will speak for itself. Also, let's use the VARK test to help students identify their own learning style, and let's have teachers document the results of the test for each student. This will help teachers understand the best way to help individual students if they are struggling.
