Channel 9's reality television show 'Married at First Sight Australia' stands accused of ignoring and even enabling emotional and psychological abuse under its banner. Instead of taking a comprehensive stance against all forms of domestic violence, the show only addresses physical incidents, often without providing any content warning for viewers. This negligence not only perpetuates a poor understanding of domestic violence but also puts the female participants in potentially dangerous situations. One in four Australian women has experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2018). By not addressing such serious issues, Channel 9 indirectly contributes to the normalization of abusive behavior. We must advocate for change. The production team needs to be held accountable and a thorough review of safety procedures should be conducted to ensure that emotional and psychological abuse are treated with the seriousness they deserve.
