Decriminalize Psychedelics in Seattle and then Washington State!

The Issue

Psychedelic plant medicines and their synthesized counterparts have the potential to change the way we address mental health. These psychedelic medicines, also called 'entheogens', include psilocybin, ayahuasca, ibogaine,  and more. For people living with debilitating illnesses such as depression, substance dependency, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment with these medicines, combined with a therapeutic approach, can be game changing. For people who seek personal development, these plant medicines catalyze profound experiences of spiritual and personal growth.

However, the life-changing potential of these plant medicines is currently locked down by federal regulations. Psychedelic medicines are classified by the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) as Schedule 1—which falsely states these substances have no medical use, and a high potential for abuse. This Schedule 1 classification has not caught up with the latest scientific research. Today, possession of even the smallest amount of these plant medicines can put a person in jail, prevent them from getting a job, from getting a student loan, or cause them to lose custody of their children.

We have the opportunity as citizens of Seattle to make psychedelic medicines available to people who could benefit from them. The Seattle City Council could pass an ordinance that decriminalizes possession and exchange of natural psychedelics. This ordinance would put place possession of these substances as Seattle's lowest law enforcement priority, and allow integration of plant medicine into our communities through the gather-gift-grow model of decriminalization.

You can help make this happen. Please consider signing this online petition to endorse the ordinance—to tell your city legislators that you think psychedelic plant medicines should be made available in Seattle for medical, therapeutic, research, and personal use.
