Let Crawley Decide Its Future in West Sussex

Let Crawley Decide Its Future in West Sussex
The Issue
I have called Crawley my home since 1997. Throughout the years, I have seen it flourish and grow while maintaining a vibrant spirit of community. This sense of belonging and identity isn't just something I feel, but a shared sentiment among many residents.
It's not just a town; it's our home. Now, with the looming threat of restructuring by the government to uproot us from West Sussex and merge us into Reigate and Banstead in Surrey, I believe Crawley stands to lose more than geographical boundaries; it risks losing its identity.
Since 1947, Crawley has been intricately woven into the fabric of West Sussex. This historical bond aligns with our cultural heritage, our local governance, and our communal ties. A forced transition to Surrey, where we may be seen merely as a strategic economic asset due to Gatwick Airport, potentially positions us as a financial outpost under the jurisdiction of the London Mayor. Such a shift reduces us to a pawn in wider metropolitan strategies, thus eroding the unique character that Crawley embodies.
The government’s decision to suspend democratic processes and decide on Crawley’s future without consulting its people is deeply undemocratic. The very essence of democracy is allowing the people a say in their future. We must have the opportunity to cast our vote and express our voice on whether we want to remain aligned with West Sussex or face realignment to Surrey.
This petition calls on the local government and responsible authorities to honor democratic principles and grant the people of Crawley the right to vote on this significant change. Transparency and public consultation should be at the heart of such decisions, rather than top-down mandates that overlook the will of the local populace.
Join me in this crucial cause to protect Crawley’s identity, heritage, and the democratic rights of its residents. Please sign this petition to let Crawley's voice be heard, and ensure our town’s future is decided by those who genuinely call it home.
