The issue

We, the undersigned, hereby petition Bayside City Council  to undertake a transparent and community-first process to determine the future use of the public land currently leased to Cheltenham Golf Club.

From: Warwick Hill-Rennie, Resident of Cheltenham and General Manager of The Victoria Golf Club.

Supported by: Cheltenham Football & Netball Club, Bayside Argonauts Football (Soccer) Club, Cheltenham Cricket Club and the Board of The Victoria Golf Club

To: The Mayor and Councillors of Bayside City Council

As a resident of Cheltenham, and with the full support of the Cheltenham Football & Netball Club, Bayside Argonauts Football (Soccer) Club, Cheltenham Cricket Club and the Board of the Victoria Golf Club, I am writing to petition Bayside City Council to undertake a transparent and community-first process to determine the future use of the public land currently leased to Cheltenham Golf Club.

The land between holes 5 and 6 is too narrow for safe golf play, with errant shots regularly reaching the adjoining ovals and endangering users. Without barriers or buffer zones, the risk is constant and unacceptable.

We respectfully request that Council:

  1. Undertake formal public consultation to explore all potential future uses of the site that deliver the greatest long-term community benefit.
  2. Initiate a public Expression of Interest (EOI) process to allow community groups, clubs, and organisations to put forward proposals that enhance recreational and sporting outcomes for the community.
  3. Defer any lease renewal or exclusive negotiations until this public process is complete, ensuring all options are properly considered.
  4. Undertake formal public consultation to explore all potential future uses of the site that deliver the greatest long-term community benefit.

This is a rare opportunity to reimagine how this land can serve the Cheltenham and Bayside community for decades to come. We encourage Council to prioritise community outcomes and to actively engage local residents and clubs in determining the site’s future use

By signing this petition, you are supporting a transparent, community-driven approach to securing the best future for this vital public space.
