I'm creating this petition out of a pure and earnest desire: PLESASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEee, I love raccoons, but unfortunately it's currently illegal for any Australian citizen to own one. Yet, many other similar-sized exotic pets are allowed. As we speak, several other countries have already legalized raccoon ownership with proven success.

Raccoons, like any other pet, can bring joy and companionship to their owners. Contrary to common belief, these creatures can be trained, domesticated, and are capable of forming bonds with the human family they belong to (Source: National Geographic).

That said, we also recognize the potential ecological impacts. We are not advocating for the irresponsibly broad release of raccoons into the wild. We believe that if introduced, it must be carefully managed in a manner that would avoid introducing this non-native species into the wild Australian environments.

My plea is to see this legislation updated to allow the ownership of raccoons in Australia, provided the necessary animal care standards are met. It's time for us to revisit the restrictions and allow Australian citizens to nurture this wonderful and unique species within their homes.
