Legalize Ferret Ownership in Queensland

The issue

I am a resident of Queensland who has personally experienced the joy and therapeutic benefits of owning a ferret. My pet ferret was not just an animal, but a companion who significantly improved my mental health. Unfortunately, under current laws in Queensland, owning such wonderful creatures is prohibited.

Ferrets are legal pets in many parts of the world including most Australian states except for Queensland and the Northern Territory. They are known to be intelligent and sociable animals that can provide emotional support to their owners. A study published by "Frontiers in Veterinary Science" found that pets can serve as important sources of social and emotional support for 'everyday people,' not just individuals facing significant health challenges (McConnell et al., 2011).

The prohibition on ferret ownership seems arbitrary when considering other animals with similar care requirements are allowed as pets within our state. It's time we reconsider this law that deprives us from experiencing the companionship these charming creatures offer.

We urge the government of Queensland to review its stance on this issue and legalize ferret ownership, providing guidelines for responsible pet ownership instead of outright bans. Please sign this petition if you believe everyone should have the right to choose their source of comfort - even if it comes with four legs and fur!
