Legalize and Decriminalize Marijuana in Texas for the Benefit of Its Citizens

Legalize and Decriminalize Marijuana in Texas for the Benefit of Its Citizens
The Issue
This plea comes from a personal place. My mother served time in prison due to marijuana-related charges, which has shaped her life and views on the substance in a deeply negative way. Our journey through this system has sparked a fire within me to challenge the status quo. It is time for Texas to reconsider its stance on marijuana – not only to decriminalize but also to fully legalize it.
Despite its controversial status, evidence suggests that marijuana can be used safely and responsibly for numerous benefits. Australia's 2019 National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre report found a significant decline in opioid use following the legalization of marijuana, suggesting its potential as a safer alternative for pain management.
Furthermore, our state has seen more than 60,000 arrests annually for marijuana possession, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s 2018 Crime in Texas Report. The criminalization of marijuana curtails many Texans' futures, hampers potential employment opportunities, and costs taxpayers an estimated $311 million per annum for arrests and prosecutions alone.
The changing tide across the United States and around the world suggests an urgent need to reevaluate Texas's approach towards marijuana. At present, 33 states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes, and 11 have allowed its recreational use.
We call upon lawmakers, law enforcement, and fellow citizens to participate in a broader conversation about marijuana legalisation in Texas. In doing so, we hope to take a significant step toward effecting positive change, not only in our home state but also throughout the United States. Please sign this petition to support the legalisation and decriminalization of marijuana in Texas.
