The issue

We, the young people and riders of Cairns, are asking for designated, legal areas where we can ride e-motorbikes, dirt bikes, and off-road machines safely and legally. Right now, there are almost no places we are allowed to ride, and this is causing big problems for our community, our safety, and our local youth.

Currently, riding on public roads, footpaths, parks, beaches, or council land is illegal. But there are very few legal tracks or parks available in Cairns. This leaves us with no choice: either we don’t ride at all, or we ride in places where we risk fines, police action, or accidents with cars and pedestrians. This is not fair, and it is not safe. When young riders have nowhere to go, they end up riding in dangerous or inappropriate areas simply because there is nowhere else. This leads to conflict with residents, noise complaints, and unnecessary risk to everyone.

Riding is not just a hobby — it is a positive, healthy activity. It keeps us active, teaches us responsibility, road safety, mechanical skills, and respect for rules and the environment. For many young people in Cairns, it is a way to stay out of trouble, make friends, and build confidence. Without legal spaces, we lose a great way to keep youth engaged, active, and off the streets. Other regions in Queensland — like Townsville, Mackay, and the Sunshine Coast — have dedicated motocross tracks, off-road parks, and legal riding areas. Cairns, as a major regional city, deserves the same facilities. We have plenty of open space and land that could be used, without disturbing homes or natural environments.

Having proper, legal areas would solve almost all the problems people complain about. Riders would have a safe, controlled place to go, so we wouldn’t need to ride in suburbs, on roads, or in parks. Noise and damage would be limited to one area, and rules could be set up to protect neighbours and nature. It would reduce police time spent issuing fines, lower the risk of accidents, and turn a problem into a positive community asset.

We are not asking to ride anywhere we want — we are asking for one place where we can ride legally. We want to follow the law, ride safely, and enjoy our sport without breaking rules or upsetting anyone. We ask Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Government to work with us to create at least one designated riding area in Cairns. This will make our city safer, quieter, and better for everyone — riders, residents, and families.
