Launch independent investigation into Surry County justice system

Launch independent investigation into Surry County justice system
The Issue
I was summoned to court for an eviction, and I was present on time as it was the first case of the day. When I attempted to plead my case, I was abruptly stopped by the bailiff, who questioned my presence, saying, "Who are you? You haven't been sworn in." I responded, "C. S. I'm on the docket for this eviction." Yet, the bailiff casually told the magistrate, "You can swear him in if you want to." Astonishingly, the magistrate continued the proceedings without acknowledging me, so I kindly interrupted, asking, "You're not going to swear me in?" Regrettably, she did not.
This experience is not mine alone. Many residents of Surry County, North Carolina, feel that our justice system is failing to provide fair and impartial hearings. Incidents of mismanagement, neglect, and even misconduct in court sessions have become all too common, undermining public confidence in our local legal processes.
According to a recent study from the National Center for State Courts, one-third of Americans believe that issues like those I've encountered contribute to a lack of trust in the judicial system. If these issues are not promptly addressed, the integrity of our community's entire justice system is jeopardized.
With this petition, we call upon the North Carolina Attorney General to immediately launch an independent investigation into the Surry County Justice System. We aim to identify and address systemic issues, ensuring that justice is served in an unbiased and transparent manner for all residents.
Our proposed solutions include mandatory audits of court proceedings, establishment of a community oversight committee, and enhanced training for court officials to maintain professionalism and proper court decorum.
We urge our state leadership to take these necessary steps towards ensuring that everyone in Surry County receives the fair trial they are entitled to, without prejudice or procedural errors. Sign this petition to bring about vital reforms in our justice system and restore the public's faith in justice for all.
