The Issue
In 2012, I was diagnosed with endometriosis following a laparoscopic procedure. Since then, I've endured five operations, countless hormone treatments, multiple A&E visits, and numerous hospital admissions. I am a nurse, having qualified in 2012, but my career has been significantly impacted by this condition. At just 30 years of age, in 2021, I made the heart-wrenching decision to undergo a hysterectomy. Yet, here I am in 2023, still suffering from debilitating pain. Despite navigating the complexities of GP and NHS referrals, my symptoms continue to worsen without effective treatment.
Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women worldwide and can lead to chronic pain, infertility, and even life-altering decisions like mine. The inadequacies in gynaecology care for endometriosis sufferers demand urgent attention. Women face unbearable suffering due to lengthy waiting lists, a lack of understanding from healthcare professionals, and consistent medical gaslighting, often leading to dire mental health consequences, including suicidal thoughts.
The time for change is now. We must launch a thorough and official inquiry into the systemic failures in gynaecology care, particularly regarding endometriosis. This inquiry should seek to:
1. Evaluate the current waiting times for diagnosis and treatment and implement measures to reduce them significantly.
2. Educate healthcare professionals about the specifics of endometriosis, ensuring they can provide compassionate and knowledgeable care.
3. Increase funding for research into endometriosis to develop new treatments and ultimately find a cure.
4. Establish a support system for women struggling with the mental and physical toll of endometriosis.
Women deserve access to timely and effective medical care that respects their experiences and alleviates their suffering. Together, we can stand in solidarity to demand better healthcare outcomes for those afflicted by endometriosis.
