La Gomera Giant Lizards need to be saved

La Gomera Giant Lizards need to be saved

The Issue

In 1985, scientists labeled the La Gomera Giant Lizard extinct, because there were no sightings during this time period. However, in 1999, a group of Spanish biologists rediscovered the species hiding out on the cliffs of La Gomera. Since then more La Gomera Giant Lizards have been found. Currently, there are about 90 individuals remaining in the wild. The IUCN Redlist has labeled the La Gomera Giant Lizard Critically Endangered, with only 90 specimens remaining in the wild. The La Gomera Giant Lizard only lives in one of Spain’s Canary Islands, La Gomera. Nowadays, the La Gomera Giant Lizard only lives on less than 1 hectare of dry cliffs, with minimal vegetation. The La Gomera Giant Lizard plays a very important role in its community. Because the La Gomera Giant Lizard primarily feeds on fruits, it disperses many fruit seeds that grow throughout La Gomera. As the La Gomera Giant Lizard Population continues to remain critically endangered, and as they are becoming very restricted to one specific point of La Gomera, it is harder for them to play their role in their ecosystem. Many animals rely on fruits for food, and if the La Gomera Giant Lizard is not able to disperse the seeds, the La Gomera ecosystem will become much less biodiverse and many negative effects will occur if we don’t do something now.

Sign this petition if you feel that we should save the La Gomera Giant Lizard, and save La Gomera's entire ecosystem. Thank you for taking the time to read over this petition. If we are going to act, we need to do it now.
