Setting up sterilization units in every ward in Pune to sterilize and vaccinate street dogs.

The Issue

Human Animal conflict has reached incredibly sad proportions in the city of Pune. Animal welfare officers, activists, volunteers and the dogs are facing human wrath on a daily basis. Cruelty towards street dogs has reached unbelievable and shocking levels. The sterilization machinery is out dated and slow. There is a break in the sterilization process every year for 3 months during the mating season to make way for new tenders. This results in unchecked reproduction. Pune has grown by leaps and bounds. The need of the hour is to have  a sterilization and holding area in every ward and conduct sterilizations on a war footing. Micro management of the issue is necessary where each ward can look after a lesser number of animals and thus become more efficient. This will also curb rabies to a great extent as all sterilized dogs are vaccinated.Ward officers can micro manage the animals in their wards more efficiently through sterilization, vaccinations and 6 monthly vet checks. Ngos can lend support. Its important for all of us citizens to ensure our street dogs live healthy lives in peace and in harmony with their human neighbours however this will only be achieved if the street dog population is controlled through sterilization and a protocol of micro management covering sterilization, vaccination and heath checks is introduced. In my capacity as an Animal Welfare officer, I am happy to sit with the commissioner to draw up a new format for the city of Pune. Please sign this petition, lets make the city of Pune, the first city in India to micromanage its street dog population.
