NCTZENS Want Formal Apology From SME and NCT

NCTZENS Want Formal Apology From SME and NCT

The Issue

NCT, the popular south-Korean boy group under SM entertainment. For years, NCT have committed multiple insensitive acts including:

- Appropriating black culture by wearing cornrows, twists, dreadlocks and wearing durags
- Insulting black heritage by referring to ethnic hairstyles as ‘boiled octopus’, ‘mop’ or ‘reggae’ hair
- Making multiple fat-phobic comments, implying that bigger people should exercise, repeatedly calling members fat, and likening bigger people to pigs
- Telling a group member to lose some weight to be pretty during a ‘diss battle’
- Mocking South Asian culture with stereotypical dance moves often used as a micro aggression towards South Asians
- Colourist remarks to darker skinned group members (repeatedly calling tan skin burnt)
- Exaggerating use of AAVE ( African American Vernacular Language), a dialect that is often misattributed as ‘improper’ English
- Wearing indecent symbols resonant to slavery and mistreatment of black people in America
- Mouthing the N slur to a song on a public radio broadcast

It’s is disappointing and heartbreaking that none of these incidents were ever apologized for. Over the course of four years, those comments were unaddressed, even though many international fans have reached out to the boys and SM Entertainment for a statement. Emails and hashtags have trended, but nothing has changed, and the voices of fans were overlooked and fell on deaf ears. Many communities were and still are affected by the words of the members, along with the styling and lack of responsibility from the company. Nctzens are asking for an apology. We are asking that we are listened to and treated with respect, no matter our background or skin colour. That beauty doesn’t correlate with the number on the scale.

We love all the members. However there needs to be a drastic change of behaviour. This is shameful, NCT is a GLOBAL group now. There needs to be a heightened sense of cultural awareness and sensitivity, they are all grown adults.

We demand SM Entertainment look into this matter and release a statement immediately. If no action is taken, it will be a clear indication of where we ALL stand on this issue.
