Stop shutting down parental support groups!
The Issue
It is an extremely challenging time to be a new parent. Pregnancies overshadowed by anxiety, babies born in lockdown, new parents denied access to friends and family and maternity leave that is lonely and isolating, rather than full of joy and excitement.
For many new parents, a support group is a lifeline. For those suffering with depression, it is the reason to get up and leave the house. For those with no family or support network, it is the place to connect with a friendly face. For those living with domestic violence, it is their safe haven. For new babies, a support group is social and educational development.
Covid has thus far robbed new parents of almost every opportunity to build and foster support relationships, whether this be from family, friends or support groups. It has condemned them to significant periods of isolation and denied pre-school children of their right to educational and social development. The resulting risk to mental health for both parent and child is significant.
The government now recognises that support groups for new parents and babies are vital. As such, they have stated by exception that these groups can continue face to face under lockdown restrictions, providing they can be operated in a Covid secure way. Kirklees Council however have shut face to face meetings down for new parents, citing them as 'non-essential'.
I want to fight for all new parents, make us matter and get face to face support reinstated. However I need your support to make Kirklees Council understand how vital these resources are for new parents and their babies alike. By signing, I’d love to think that together we could bring about a positive change that would benefit so many who are currently suffering in silence.
