In February 2025 I was fined £700 for leaving a medium-sized box next to my own bins, in the private car park of my own block of flats, next to the recycling bins. The box didn't fit inside the bin, which is the only reason it was left next to it.

South Cambridgeshire Council reacted like I was a felon and fined me for fly-tipping. Their letters and correspondence were strongly-worded, showed no empathy and did not take into account the clear overreaction or logical reasoning for the box being left there for collection. 

As a neurodivergent person, I struggle with social rules, justice and black and white thinking. The council were told about my disability, but did not consider it in their decision, despite clear legislation stating otherwise. I was left feeling vulnerable, severely anxious, and had to take time off work due to the emotional impact. 

I am campaigning for councils to provide accidental fly-tippers, including those who may need neurodivergent or disabled, with more kindness and consideration when deciding on penalties.
