An Open Letter To Mayor Susan McCartney..

We are writing as residents, families, members of the LGBTQ+ community in West Orange, and allies, to express our deep disappointment and hurt over the removal of the Pride-themed steps at Town Hall.

For years, the Pride steps have served as a visible symbol of inclusion and belonging. Their sudden removal—without notice or engagement with the community—has left many feeling erased. The timing, on the eve of Pride Month, makes this especially painful. This is a time when LGBTQ+ individuals and families celebrate our very existence, even as our rights are being challenged nationwide. Removing such a visible symbol at this moment sends the wrong message.

We are also concerned that no representatives from the West Orange Human Relations Commission or Town Council were informed in advance. While we were told the steps were being prepared for the town’s 250th celebration, this was not communicated proactively, nor was there any reassurance that the Pride steps would return.

When community members expressed how hurt LGBTQ+ families were, you responded that those feelings were “not fair” because a Pride event is being planned. Respectfully, an event does not replace the need for visible, permanent representation at town hall. The Pride steps are an everyday affirmation that LGBTQ+ residents belong here.

We also ask for a clear explanation as to why the Pride steps could not be permanently restored upon the completion of repairs.

We respectfully request:

A written commitment to repaint the Pride steps permanently at Town Hall after the steps are repaired, with a specific public date as well as a permanent pride presence on the towns e-sign.

A commitment to proactive communication and collaboration with relevant community groups and town leadership on decisions by impacting representation.

West Orange should be a place where all residents feel seen and valued—consistently, not conditionally.

Sincerely,

The West Orange Community
