President Trump just announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports—openly admitting it’s retaliation for Jair Bolsonaro’s criminal prosecution in Brazil.

Let’s be clear: This is not about trade. It’s political interference in another country’s legal system to protect an ally accused of attempting a coup.

Bolsonaro’s presidency was marked by deep democratic backsliding, dangerous disinformation campaigns, and catastrophic environmental damage—including record deforestation of the Amazon. After losing re-election, he undermined Brazil’s democratic process and is now facing serious criminal charges related to efforts to cling to power.

Brazil’s courts must be allowed to do their work without foreign pressure or intimidation. The United States should not be using economic threats to shield Bolsonaro or any political figure from justice.

We call on the White House and State Department to immediately withdraw this tariff threat and affirm respect for Brazil’s judicial independence. No trade war should be waged to influence a trial.
