The Issue

Swedish media have reported that the University of Gothenburg’s Master’s Programme in Investigative Journalism (MIJ) is set to be paused between 2026 and 2027. We urge the relevant decision-makers to reconsider and not proceed with this decision.

At a time when journalism faces growing political, financial and technological pressure, MIJ plays a vital role in training the next generation of investigative reporters. The programme equips students with practical and technical skills that few others prioritise, including data journalism, investigative methodologies and the use of open source intelligence to uncover and verify information. Its focus is clear: rigorous research, accountability and high-quality reporting.

MIJ also fosters a truly international network. Students and alumni collaborate across borders, forming partnerships and gaining professional experience around the world. The programme brings together participants from diverse cultural, professional and academic backgrounds, reflecting the multidisciplinary reality of modern journalism and strengthening the field as a whole.

Pausing MIJ would not simply suspend a degree programme. It would weaken a proven training ground for investigative journalism at a time when society needs it most.
