Keep popular, licensed music in GLL gyms to protect the diverse and inclusive atmosphere

Keep popular, licensed music in GLL gyms to protect the diverse and inclusive atmosphere
The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the recent introduction of policy change in the music platform by GLL. This decision not only hampers our ability to be inclusive in our teaching but also undermines professional standards by imposing severe restrictions on the types of music we can use in our classes. The platform lacks diversity and a breadth of content, significantly limiting our ability to tailor our music selections to the specific cultural preferences and needs of our diverse participants.
As a charitable social enterprise rather than a private corporation, GLL has a fundamental duty to prioritize community wellbeing and uphold Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) by providing a vibrant, culturally relevant environment that motivates all residents
GLL cannot benefit from the tax advantages of a charitable social enterprise and the use of our publicly-owned buildings while simultaneously adopting the restrictive, corporate policies of private chains like David Lloyd. Unlike private gyms, GLL is contractually obligated as a public service partner to ensure its environment—including its music and cultural provision—directly reflects and respects the protected characteristics of the diverse communities it is paid to serve."
Music is more than just a backdrop; it's an essential component of the fitness experience. It energizes, motivates, and connects participants of various backgrounds. However, with the current limitations, we can't incorporate necessary, culturally significant music categories like Soca and Afrobeat and British born music like, grime, jungle, UK garage, funky house. This omission represents a permanent barrier to inclusivity and innovation, forcing instructors into a rigid structure that fails to reflect the rich tapestry of their communities.
Moreover, this policy indirectly discriminates against instructors and participants from Black Caribbean, African, and other ethnic minority backgrounds. Given the multicultural nature of our communities, it raises serious concerns under the Equality Act 2010. The inability to provide an environment that respects and includes all cultural identities contributes to a sense of exclusion and lack of representation.
GLL must recognize the importance of musical diversity not just as a preference but as a fundamental requirement for cultural representation and fairness. We urge them to reconsider and modify their policy to enable instructors to expand the music library, thereby affording every instructor the opportunity to create truly inclusive and dynamic fitness experiences.
We note that Hackney Council has admitted in its 2024-2026 Equality Plan that bias remains embedded in its service delivery, particularly affecting Global Majority artists. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a change that respects diversity, inclusivity, and enhances the overall quality of fitness instruction.
Let us work together to promote an environment where cultural representation is celebrated, and every participant feels truly valued and engaged. Please sign this petition to support this vital change.
