PETITION TO KEEP THE VAN SAUN PARK / WINTER WONDERLAND ICE RINK OPEN THROUGH MARCH 1

We, the undersigned, respectfully urge Bergen County leadership to keep the ice rink at Van Saun Park / Winter Wonderland open through March 1.

Closing the rink in early January removes a vital community resource during the heart of winter.  This is a time when families, children, and residents most need access to structured physical activity, outdoor recreation, and meaningful programming.

One of the most impactful elements of the rink is it learn-to-skate lesson program for children and adults. These lessons are exceptionally well organized, consistent, and meaningful. For many families, they are the only dependable winter activity available in January and February.

We have witnessed children who began the program afraid to step onto the ice, afraid to fall, and lacking confidence. Over time, these same children learned to get back up after falling, try again, and push forward. Some who started out fearful ended the program confidently skating and even helping other children who were just beginning. These lessons teach resilience, confidence, perseverance, and kindness, skills that extend far beyond the ice.

The timing of the season is critical. The holiday period is often busy and fragmented, and many families are only just getting started when January arrives. It is January and February that allow for focus, routine, and real progress. The additional 8–10 weeks of skating are essential for skill development and confidence building. Without the rink operating during this time, the lesson program cannot continue.

Beyond lessons, the rink supports:

Local schools, after-school programs, and youth organizations
Youth hockey teams, skating clubs, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and recreation groups
Seasonal employment for instructors, rink staff, and performers
Live weekend music and performances that add cultural and artistic value to the park
In previous seasons, the rink remained open through March 1, and demand during January and February was strong. Families and organizations are ready and willing to continue scheduling lessons, group outings, and events if the rink remains open.

Closing the rink during the coldest months removes an essential space for physical health, mental well-being, community connection, and economic activity. Winter Wonderland and the Van Saun Park ice rink are not just seasonal attractions.  They are places where confidence is built, friendships are formed, and families come together.

Please do not take this away from our children, families, and community just as they are getting started.
We respectfully request that the ice rink remain open through March 1.
