The Issue

At Coventry Elementary, where my child attends, YCSD announced Lifewise Academy enrollment under Community Announcements in the January 15, 2025 YCSDigest. Lifewise is one organization that has received support from the Heritage Foundation who called this a conservative organization (source). While Lifewise promises “valuable Christian-based education”, offering this optional education during school hours (e.g. resource or lunch) has significant problems.

It overlooks the religious diversity that makes our community unique and vibrant. Many parents and community members are concerned about the inclusion of religious instruction in our public schools. Public schools are meant to be a neutral space that welcomes all children, regardless of their beliefs. Introducing Lifewise Academy is intended to blur the line between public education and religious teachings, potentially alienating families of different faiths or those who prefer secular instruction. It encourages kids to recruit other kids into this one specific religious perspective, Christianity. This is the ability of some parents to use their kids to pressure other kids into this during school hours. That is not increasing parental rights it is mobilizing and promoting a specific religious perspective during school hours which only aligns with some parents. There are more religious and non-religious parents who do not want to have their kids pressured to participate with this narrow religious doctrine during school hours

Research shows that embracing diversity and inclusivity in educational settings fosters a richer learning environment and develops well-rounded students. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, America's religious landscape is incredibly diverse, and maintaining church-state separation in schools ensures that we respect this diversity and uphold constitutional principles.

Instead of embedding religious programs into the school day, families should be given the option to explore religious education outside of school hours, preserving the secular nature of public education. Schools should focus on creating curricula that enhance critical thinking, STEM skills, and global perspectives.

Let's ensure that our schools remain places where all families feel welcome. Keep Lifewise Academy out of York County's schools and help maintain a neutral educational environment that respects our community's diversity.
Please sign this petition to voice your support for keeping our schools inclusive and secular for the benefit and growth of every student.

In addition to the importance of recognizing religious differences, this opt in Christian education has other problems. YCSD is allowing Lifewise access to Coventry Elementary staff to coordinate optional religious instruction during the school day. They say it is not sponsored or endorsed by YCSD yet…. Lifewise describes this as “released time religious instruction is a legal program integrated into the school day, weekly or biweekly” and “The class schedule is set by school personnel in consultation with Lifewise representatives. Classes are held during non-Core academic periods, such as during  lunch or electives”. The school is coordinating this during the day with staff time so don’t tell us YCSD isn’t endorsing this.

It is important to add in additional to taxpayer time of YCSD staff to help coordinate this it also disrupts resource instruction for both teachers and students.
