The Victorian Government have pledged to remove all "dangerous" and "congested" level crossings on the Frankston railway line, including Latrobe Street between Mentone & Cheltenham Stations.

Instead of building the railway under or over the road, they intend to simply close the road at the crossing, greatly inconveniencing locals and non-locals alike.

This crossing is not dangerous, and closing the road will not reduce congestion, in fact it will funnel more traffic through the already very congested Balcombe and Charman roads, increasing commute times and unnecessarily reducing access for residents and emergency services.

The community were not consulted about this and both residents and motorists overwhelmingly want the crossing to remain open.

Closing Latrobe Street to vehicles appears to be purely a box-ticking exercise so the Victorian Government can claim they have made the Frankston line "level crossing free".
