Keep Heathrow Safe: Don't ditch the Ambassadors!

The Issue

Well known for their purple uniforms, Passenger Ambassadors are the face of Heathrow. Airports can be stressful and confusing places for many people. But Ambassadors are always there to provide friendly, one-to-one assistance with passengers navigating the airport, completing security and passport control, and accessing connecting flights.

In addition to their normal duties, Ambassadors have played an essential role during the pandemic in keeping people safe: handing out face masks, managing 2-metre distancing in queues, assisting elderly and other passengers with e-gates, and even helping disabled passengers get to their destination.

Despite this, Heathrow management have made the brutal decision to ditch the Ambassadors, leaving 500 workers out in the cold in the middle of a pandemic.

This decision will place passengers at risk during the pandemic, and leave elderly people and others without a human face to provide reassuring, personalised support with navigating the airport.

It will severely detract from customers’ positive experience at the airport in future, and jeopardise Heathrow's status as a world class airport.

This decision is not necessary. In May, Heathrow told investors that its £3.2bn liquidity is “sufficient to maintain the business at least over the next 12 months, even with no passengers”.

We, users of Heathrow Airport,  are calling on CEO John Holland-Kaye to keep Heathrow safe and ensure that Ambassador's jobs are protected.
