This petition has been created exclusively by the humble and loving parishioners of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and surrounding parishes in the Diocese of Alexandria.  

Father Derek Ducote has been an integral part of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Hessmer, Louisiana. His devout spiritual guidance and exemplary leadership have made a deep spiritual impact on the lives of many in our community. This Community now consists of many devoted parishioners and people who have returned to the church after being absent or spiritually dry for many years.  Over the past year, by the Holy Spirit working through Father Derek’s ministry, this Community has been inspired to live a life devoted to faith, love, and hope.  As a result, we have seen a reawakening of interest in the Mass and in the Eucharist which led to so many true encounters with Jesus.

Father Derek's unwavering faith and dedication to his pastoral duties is palpable in his tireless efforts to serve our congregation and to foster a sense of unity among God’s children. He has consistently demonstrated stewardship, compassion, understanding, wisdom, and Christ’s love in his role as our spiritual leader. When we think of Father Derek, we see Jesus through his fidelity, love, and obedience to Christ. This is the true fruit of a devout Shepherd of God. 

We understand that decisions about pastoral assignments are difficult and multifaceted; however, prayerfully we have decerned it is the Will of God that Father Derek’s assignment remains at St. Alphonsus. Removing Father Derek from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church would result in disruption of order, continuity and stability in our community which predisposes people to feelings of confusion and doubt during an already confusing time in the Catholic Church.

We respectfully request our Bishop, God’s appointed servant within the Diocese, to prayerfully reconsider Father Derek’s removal from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.  The profound spiritual growth our Church community as a whole, has found in our Lord’s humble shepherd, Father Derek, is a direct reflection of and testament to our Diocese’s tremendous vocation to lead others to Christ.
