Keep Chisasibi Schools Open to the Community
Keep Chisasibi Schools Open to the Community
The Issue
We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Cree School Board reconsider its new policy restricting local organizations from accessing the facilities of Big River High School, Waapinichikush Elementary School, and Upichinaausiun Chiskutimatukimikw School for community events, programs, and activities.
In a community like Chisasibi, where public infrastructure is limited, these schools have long served as essential gathering spaces for recreation, cultural exchange, and community development. The reasons provided for this restriction do not reflect the realities of our community, nor the shared responsibility we hold to support the wellbeing of our youth, families, and elders.
This policy negatively impacts our community by reducing access to safe, inclusive spaces such as the kids’ parks, school library, and gymnasiums that host after-school sports, cultural programs, and Cree language activities. These programs help children and teens stay active, connected, and proud of their identity, while offering adults opportunities to engage, volunteer, and support one another. Restricting access increases social isolation, undermines physical and mental health, and removes vital outlets that promote balance and belonging. Beyond individual wellbeing, these shared spaces and programs foster collaboration and strengthen community ties — factors that directly influence employee satisfaction and retention in local services and institutions.
Our schools must remain centers of learning and community — places that strengthen our connections, culture, and collective wellbeing.
Signed by concerned community members, organizations, and leaders of Chisasibi.
