The Issue

To the United States Congress, Department of Homeland Security, and the American People,

Every year, thousands of international students come to the United States to study in its world-renowned universities, bringing their dreams, hard work, and family’s life savings to the land of opportunity. They have to meet stricter admission criteria at much smaller acceptance rate, ensuring only the best get admitted. These are the smartest people in the world who excel in STEM fields, contribute to their communities, and envision building a life in America—only to face an uncertain future due to outdated immigration policies.

We ask for a simple, life-changing solution: Grant automatic green cards to foreign STEM graduates of U.S. universities.

This is not just a matter of fairness—it’s an investment in America’s future.

Why This Matters for Americans

1. They Invest in America’s Economy and Society

International students and their families sacrifice everything for the opportunity to study here. They pay up to three times the tuition of domestic students, contributing over $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy in the 2023-24 academic year alone. Over four years, they bring $160 billion, supporting 378,000 American jobs in housing, retail, and education. After contributing so much, why should they be forced to leave when they want to stay and give back?

2. They Fill Critical STEM Workforce Gaps

Hiring highly skilled foreign workers is not a zero-sum game and WILL NOT take away American jobs. America faces a shortfall of over 133,000 engineering jobs annually, a gap expected to persist through 2030. Similalry there is a shortage of over 60,000 physicians, 13,000 primary healthcare workers and neaerly 77,000 non-primary healthcare workers. These graduates aren’t taking jobs away—they’re filling roles essential to keeping America at the forefront of innovation. By retaining these skilled workers, we secure America’s dominance in technology, medicine, and science, fueling economic growth and global competitiveness.

3. They Embody America’s Promise

America’s greatest achievements have been powered by immigrants. From the engineers behind Apollo missions to today’s AI pioneers, skilled immigrants have shaped this nation’s success. Half of S&P 500 companies were started by immigrants and created millions of jobs for Americans. These students believe in America’s values. Let’s show them that America believes in them too.

4. The Moral and Economic Costs of Inaction

Turning away these talented individuals is not just a loss of talent—it’s a loss of humanity. Their stories are of sacrifice, hope, and excellence. Meanwhile, countries like Canada and Germany are rolling out the red carpet for them. Why should America lose out on this incredible resource?

Our Call to Action

We call on Congress and the Department of Homeland Security to create a streamlined, automatic green card process for foreign STEM graduates of accredited U.S. universities. This approach is already supported by the incoming President and his key advisors.

This policy would:

Secure America’s place as a global innovation leader

Address the STEM workforce shortage without displacing American workers.
Honor the contributions and sacrifices of international students and their families.
Together, let’s build a future where talent and hard work are rewarded, and America remains the land of opportunity.
