Change for Pitbulls
Change for Pitbulls
The Issue
MYTH: Pit Bulls are all inherently vicious.
Reality: This is a stereotype that is biased toward generalizing and condemning an entire breed based on the actions of a few bad people. The truth is that each dog should be evaluated by his own merits and not by his breed. A corollary truth is that there truly are no bad dogs, only bad people. In his essay Troublemakers, Malcolm Gladwell discusses what Pit Bull stereotypes can teach us about the wrongness of racial profiling of both humans and dogs.
In 2004 , There were 114 bites by German Sheppard's, and 86 bites by Pitbulls.
10 years later, in 2014 there were 92 bites by German Sheppard's, 41 bites from Labrador retriever's and 21 Russel terrier bites,
So how come pitbulls were banned, but not the German Sheppard breed?
A pit-bull, or any dog in fact is only as vicious as its owner makes it
Since 2005 pit bulls have been banned in Ontario, Canada.
Ontario was the only province in Canada where pit bulls are banned and ridiculed because some people use them to breed for dog fights, Now Montreal is going to be added to the list. A major reason pit bulls have a bad name and reputation is because of these particular people, the dogs themselves are not to blame. Many other pit bull owners who have not bred pit bulls for the use of dog fights and have taken all precautions towards the public when walking their pit bulls have gone as far as moving out of Ontario due to this law. Here I quote CBC News " The ban makes it illegal to breed pit bulls in Ontario or bring the dogs into the province. Dogs already in Ontario are allowed to stay as long as they are sterilized, leashed and muzzled in public. Puppies born after Nov. 27, 2005 must be shipped out of the province, given to a research facility or destroyed."
Destroyed, yes destroyed. About 1,000 Ontario pit bulls have been put down since the ban took effect this is according to statistics in 2014. These dogs are given no chance due to statistics from 2001-2004 stating, pit bulls were more likely to bite people and domestic animals than any other breed. It's been a decade since the province wide ban has been set, I think it's time we give these dogs another chance and I know people will stand by me on this one. Here I quote NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo in an interview with a Global Toronto reporter “It’s the deed, not the breed. The owner should be held responsible, not the dog. We’re in favor of a dangerous dog act, but one that’s reasonably written and well-researched, and this one isn’t. Our law would hold the owner liable, because it’s the owner that trains the dogs.”
Here are a few reasons why pit bulls aren't as dangerous as the public believes.
Pit Bulls are very eager to please people. A Pit Bull will do almost anything his favorite people ask of him, just to hear their praise. These dogs crave our attention and approval, and are very social with humans. This devotion to people has contributed heavily to the bad reputation of Pit Bulls, because a bad person can use a Pit Bull’s eagerness to please to train the dog for nefarious or criminal purposes.
it's the owners fault not the breeds fault for the bad behavior.
Pit Bulls are great with children. Pit Bulls are a loyal, people-oriented breed that thrive as part of the family. They are affectionate with both adults and children. Note: All children should be taught how to interact with animals and should be supervised when playing with any animal.
Yes, children should be supervised while playing with any animal, not just pit bulls. Any dog, cat etc.. could hurt a child if not supervised properly.
Pit Bulls love, love, love people. And Pit Bulls do not discriminate against humans for any reason. They are happiest when they are with us. They remind us of this by wiggling happily and kissing us often!
Pit bulls are very affectionate, Pit Bulls are highly intelligent
