Kargil War - Save our own history, let’s include these stories in our texbooks
The Issue
As we stand in awe of India's map today, it is essential not to forget the unsung heroes whose sacrifices made this view possible - the brave warriors of the Kargil War. They showcased unwavering courage, determination, and a deep sense of patriotism while defending our beloved nation during one of the most-challenging high-altitude warfare of Kargil, between May-July 1999.
During those months, when havoc took over peaceful control - reports of Pakistani fighters infiltrating our sacred motherland ignited a fierce battle where our soldiers valiantly stood tall, despite the great geographical disadvantages they faced. Engaging in intense fighting in treacherous mountain terrain for over two months, our courageous soldiers demonstrated the epitome of resilience and dedication to our country.
The Kargil War holds immense historical significance as one of the rare instances of conventional warfare between nuclear-armed states, a testament to the gravity of our soldiers' sacrifices to safeguard our nation'snation's sovereignty.
Why is it crucial to teach the Kargil War to our future generations?
This chapter of history offers invaluable lessons about patriotism, sacrifice, and the indomitable spirit of our defenders. It fosters a sense of national pride and unity, reminding us of the strength and unity that binds us as one nation.
We owe it to these brave warriors to include their heroic tales in the textbooks of our youth. Our children must know about the real heroes, those who selflessly fought for our beautiful country and paved the way for the India we cherish today.
Let us never forget their sacrifices.
The Kargil War took the lives of five hundred soldiers and left about 1,363 wounded. It is a matter of national pride that every Indian child knows about this significant chapter in our history. Their sacrifices should never be forgotten, and their valor should be etched in the hearts of generations to come.
They wanted to be remembered.
"Please come and see where the Indian Army Fought for Your Tomorrow."
Vijaynath Thapar (Rank: Captain, Regiment: 2 Rajputana Rifles
● Awards: Vir Chakra (Posthumous))
Last words of Saurabh Kali (Rank: Lieutenant, promoted to Captain posthumously, Regiment: 4th Battalion, Jat Regiment) to his mother before going to Kargil were: ""Maa, tum dekhna. Ek din aisa kaam kar jaoonga ki saari duniya mein mera naam hoga.”
They gave up their lives. All they wanted was not to be forgotten. Let's include them in the textbooks to keep them alive always, that's what they truly deserve!
