Remove HST From Pet Care and Products

The Issue

MAKE PET CARE HST EXEMPT!

All Veterinary costs, pet food, medicine and pet products should be HST exempt.

Responsible pet ownership is no easy task. The fact that Cities across Canada don’t have a large population of dogs and cats wandering the streets is because of the commitment of our local humane societies and responsible pet owners, such as myself.

Responsible Pet Owners Need Help! I am turning to our government for help. Every day, pet owners across Canada are anxious about how much our next vet bill will cost, how we will be able to afford it, will it be a short-term or long-term illness and most importantly, will our furry companion be okay. These financial burdens aren’t something I feel Canadians should have to worry about.

Since little can be done to control what veterinarians charge, I believe all Veterinary costs, pet food, medicine and pet products should be HST exempt. We shouldn’t need to worry about paying our next vet bill, whether we feed ourselves or our pets, and good quality pet food should be affordable to all Canadians. Did you know veterinary care is Tax free just over the border in New York? Why not us?

According to the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA), the lifetime cost of pet ownership is $31,678 over a 15-year lifespan of a cat and $33,112 over a 10-year lifespan of a dog. These numbers don’t include illness, surgery, accidents, dental cleaning/surgery. These are just basic necessities such as vaccinations, food, water and licensing.

Pet Ownership is also better for our health. Psychologist Harold Herzog, a pet-loving professor at Western Carolina University who has long studied the human-animal connection said, “there are key health benefits that studies have shown pet owners have. They are higher survival rates, fewer heart attacks, less loneliness, better blood pressure, better psychological well-being, lower rates of depression and stress levels, fewer doctor visits, increased self esteem, better sleep and more physical activity." These are just some of the recorded benefits of pet ownership. Surely if our pets can keep us healthy, we need to ensure we can return the favour.
