Reinstate the Physical Fitness Tax Credit for Children Under 16

The Issue

My goal is to make playing sports in Canada, especially expensive sports like hockey, more affordable for families of low and middle income. Sports like hockey are not as diverse as they could be, and this is solely a result of the large expenditures required to play the game. In making it difficult for children of lower-income families to have the opportunity to play hockey, we are depriving them of the ability to feel accepted and integrated. Many foundations and programs that give grants have already been started, such as the Hyundai Hockey Helpers program, the Jumpstart program, and the GTHL Legacy Fund. However, it is evident that this is simply not enough. The Government of Canada used to have a $500 physical activity tax credit that parents could claim for any athletic activities that their children participated in. This tax credit was only recently removed, and the drop in sports participation amongst Canadian children, especially in more expensive sports, declined 10-15%. For example, from the time that the tax credit was removed, participation in hockey across Canada dropped 15%. Although reinstating this tax credit is a relatively small step, it is a necessary one in making sports in Canada more affordable.
