End Violence Against Children in Canada - End Corporal Punishment

The Issue

End Violence Against Children in Canada: End Corporal Punishment

Corporal Punishment of Children is legal in Canada and every year approximately 5,500 children are physically abused so badly it exceeds what Criminal Code Section 43 allows and dozens die from this abuse. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of children receive physical punishment that does not improve, only makes worse, their behavior and puts their development at risk.

Section 43 of the Criminal Code gives Parents and Guardians the right to use force on children as young as 2 years old. We are calling on Justin Trudeau, Erin O'Toole, Jagmeet Singh, Amita Kuttner, Yves-François Blanchet, and all Members of Parliament to remove section 43 of the Criminal Code within 100 days of the Federal Election on September 20, 2021.

Corporal Punishment played a role in the deaths of thousands of Indigenous children who attended residential schools. All children subjected to physical punishment are at risk for physical injury and developmental harm. Despite promises to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Actions, nothing has been done by the federal government address #6, the call to remove Section 43 from the Criminal Code.

All party leaders need to commit to repealing Section 43 by January 29, 2022. For more information see the following:
