Justice for the 32 Cats Thrown Out in Taped Plastic Containers in Canada

The Issue

On December 5, 2025, 32 cats were abandoned in taped-shut plastic containers outside the BC SPCA Sunshine Coast animal centre in Sechelt, British Columbia.

They were left there in the cold, with no warning, no ventilation, and no way to escape.

One cat was already dead when staff discovered them.

This was not a misunderstanding. It was not a mistake. It was an act of cruelty.

The cats — ranging from kittens just a few months old to adults — were packed into containers with multiple animals per box, taped closed, and dumped while the centre was closed. Staff only found them about 20 minutes later. If they hadn’t, the outcome could have been far worse.

Animal abandonment is a crime under British Columbia’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Leaving living beings sealed inside plastic containers — resulting in death — demands more than public outrage. It demands accountability.

We, the undersigned, are calling on BC SPCA Animal Protection Officers, local law enforcement, and Crown prosecutors to:

  • Identify and charge the individual or individuals responsible
  • Pursue the strongest penalties available under the law
  • Publicly affirm that large-scale animal abandonment will not be ignored or minimized.

This case is unprecedented in scale and severity. Failing to act decisively would send a dangerous message — that animals can be discarded like trash without consequence.

The cats who survived are now safe because of the tireless work of BC SPCA staff and volunteers. But safety after the fact is not justice.

Justice means consequences.

Sign this petition to demand accountability for the person who abandoned these 32 cats — because cruelty must never go unanswered.
