Justice For Ryder: Hold NYC Horse Carriage Abusers Accountable

Justice For Ryder: Hold NYC Horse Carriage Abusers Accountable
The Issue
Last year, the world watched in horror as Ryder, a visibly emaciated and exhausted carriage horse, collapsed in the streets of New York City. He struggled to rise while his driver, Ian McKeever, was seen yanking his reins and yelling at him. The footage shocked millions and sparked national outrage.
But now, in a move that defies justice and compassion, McKeever has been acquitted of animal cruelty charges.
Ryder later died in a sanctuary, and a necropsy confirmed what we all feared: he was 28 years old, not the 13 years claimed by his handler, and he was suffering from serious neurological conditions likely made worse by neglect and overwork.
There can be no justice if abusers walk free. Ryder’s suffering must not be ignored. If someone did this to a dog in broad daylight, they’d be in jail. Why should it be different for a horse?
We call on New York City lawmakers and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office to re-examine how animal cruelty cases are prosecuted and to finally end the use of horse-drawn carriages on city streets. This cruel industry has failed again and again to protect animals in its care. How many more Ryders must suffer before we act?
Ryder deserved dignity. He got abuse. His story cannot end with silence.
Add your name if you believe Ryder deserves justice — and demand New York City stop protecting abusers.
