I am writing from a deeply personal place, as someone who is autistic and grateful for my life. I was shocked and saddened to learn about the situation involving Jesse Tyler Ridgeway and his wife, who chose to terminate their pregnancy because the child was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. While I extend my sympathies for their loss, it terrifies me that such decisions are legal and seemingly normalized in 2026.

I have named their son Nissim, a Hebrew name meaning miracle.  He deserved a name.

According to this post, he was likely either killed by heartstick, or by having his arms and legs amputated and his skull crushed while fully conscious. Because of his extra chromosome, this alleged barbaric act was deemed "humane".

I can't help but wonder about the influence of their doctor in this decision, as medical professionals often play a significant role in shaping parents' perspectives. I am inclined to hold the medical system accountable, which potentially pressures parents into thinking that their child's life will be of lesser value. This is not just a medical issue—but a profound societal one, reflecting a form of legalized discrimination against those who are differently-abled.

Children with Down Syndrome can live fulfilling, happy lives, as statistics and countless stories reaffirm. In a world where diversity is increasingly celebrated, no child should be deprived of their right to life based on prenatal genetic testing. It is a slippery slope from accepting these actions to the outright promotion of eugenic policies rooted in prejudice and misunderstanding.

Personal stories, like mine, demonstrate that being differently-abled does not impede happiness or success. I am grateful to my parents who cherished me for who I am. But the thought that decisions might be made today to prevent the births of children like me, underlines a terrifying truth: it seems there's a societal movement that undervalues certain lives.

This petition aims to urge lawmakers to review and revise the policies and laws that permit such decisions based solely on Down Syndrome diagnosis. We must advocate for supportive measures for parents in such situations, ensuring they receive balanced information and counseling, understanding the potential and love that children with Down Syndrome can bring into the world.

I call on you to support this cause. By signing this petition, you send a clear message to legislators, urging them to prevent such discriminatory practices. You stand for all children regardless of genetic differences. Let us protect the future and guarantee every child’s right to life and love. Please sign this petition today.
