Petition for Justice and Safety in Memory of Amanuel “Manny” Scott Capps

On May 30th, 2024, we lost our beloved Amanuel “Manny” Scott Capps in a tragic accident in Merriam, Kansas. Manny, only 30 years old, was a devoted father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He owned Big Dog Garage Doors and was passionate about his work. On the day of the accident, he was working at Accelerated Garage Doors, doing what he loved.

While attempting to dispose of garage door parts over 10 feet long, Manny stood on top of his truck to maneuver the materials. Tragically, a nearby power line—approximately 14 feet above the ground—came into contact with the parts he was unloading. With no warning signs or barriers in place, Manny had no way of knowing the danger. He was electrocuted instantly by 7,000 volts of electricity. The area was remote, and he was not discovered until much later. At 5:16 PM, Manny was pronounced dead, and in that moment, our lives changed forever.

This heartbreaking loss could have been prevented. Evergy and Accelerated Garage Doors made the critical mistake of placing the dumping area dangerously close to live power lines. At industrial sites like these, safety standards should require power lines to be raised or marked with clear warnings to protect workers. However, there were no signs, cameras, or safeguards in place to prevent this tragedy.

Evergy is attempting to shift the blame onto Manny, citing where he was parked and that he stood on top of his truck to unload. But Manny was only doing his job with the tools and conditions provided. It is unjust that he is being blamed for circumstances beyond his control. He is no longer here to defend himself, and his death is a result of negligence—not his actions.

Manny leaves behind a 10-year-old son, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who loved him deeply. Our family is shattered, and we are struggling to grieve while also seeking justice. No family should ever have to experience this pain. We are working with wrongful death attorneys, but holding large corporations accountable is an uphill battle. If we don’t make our voices heard, these dangerous conditions will remain unchanged, putting others at risk.

We ask for your help in honoring Manny’s memory and preventing this from happening to someone else. Please sign and share this petition to demand change. We need safer workplace standards and accountability so that no other family has to suffer the loss we are enduring.

Thank you for your support. Together, we can ensure Manny’s name is heard and that meaningful changes are made.

With gratitude,

The Family and Friends of Amanuel “Manny” Scott Capps
