The Issue

On August 19th, 2024, my brother, Kalvin J. Humphrey, was found deceased in Minneapolis apartment. His cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma by the medical examiner — a violent and suspicious circumstance. Yet the Minneapolis Police Department failed to conduct a proper investigation, to date there has still has been no detective assigned to Kalvin’s case, and the family is left in silence.

The police department violated Kalvin and our family’s constitutional rights by failing to properly investigate his death. No preliminary investigation was done, although medical examiner ruled BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA.

Even with Kalvin being found dead in his apartment neatly placed under a blanket, after five days of not being seen and being told by eye witnesses that there was a physical altercation at Greenway Liquor Store (Corner of Grant St & LaSalle Ave) MPD has not assigned a detective to the case for unknown reasons, and have failed to communicate the investigation with the family, after a year of attempting to get answers into Kalvin’s case.

The Minneapolis Police Department failed to exercise reasonable care in investigating, thereby causing harm to the family’s right to justice.

This neglect is unacceptable. It raises urgent questions:

1. Why was a violent death ignored?

2. How many other families are experiencing this same neglect?

3. Why are Black lives treated as disposable by the very systems meant to protect us?

In Minneapolis, the racial disparity in violent crime is staggering. Although Black residents make up only about 18% of the city’s population, they have accounted for the overwhelming majority of homicide victims in recent years.

In 2023 alone, Black victims comprised 61% of all homicides (107 of 175 victims with known race). This disproportionate toll highlights systemic inequities and raises urgent concerns about whether Black victims and their families receive equal protection, attention, and justice from law enforcement.

Kalvin’s case is part of this troubling pattern. Despite evidence of blunt force trauma, his death was not fully investigated by the Minneapolis Police Department. The same systemic disparities reflected in the statistics, where Black residents are far more likely to be victims, yet too often see their cases neglected, which is being played out in his story.

Kalvin deserves the same thorough investigation and pursuit of justice as every other victim in Minneapolis.

We, the undersigned, demand:

A full and transparent investigation into the death of Kalvin J. Humphrey, including accountability for those responsible. The release of all records related to his case (police report, 911 logs, medical examiner details) under Minnesota’s Data Practices Act.
Oversight from Minneapolis city leadership to ensure no other families endure this level of negligence.

Kalvin’s life mattered.

His death deserves answers.

Justice delayed is justice denied.
