Justice For Baby Comer
The Issue
On April 11, 2010, Comer Cosmor Watkins, V (Baby Comer) was viciously and violently beaten until he was unconscious by Levi Hiatt. Hiatt waited 19 hours before notifying anyone about Baby Comer's condition.
Baby Comer suffered severe bruising up and down his spinal cord, arms, and legs. He also had an acute traumatic injury to his genitals, retinal hemorrhaging, as well as bleeding and swelling in his brain due to blunt force trauma to his head.
Griffith Police were notified by Munster Community Hospital in Lake County, Indiana that Baby Comer's injuries were the result of abuse. Griffith PD then arrested Levi Hiatt. At this time, Hiatt was the live-in boyfriend of Baby Comer's mother, Stephanie Smith. Baby Comer was in Hiatt's care at the time of the assault while Smith was at work. Baby Comer was later air lifted to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago, IL where he succumbed to his injuries on April 13, 2010.
Dr. Ponni Arunkumar - Forensic Pathology Specialist of Cook County, IL ruled Baby Comer's death a Homicide as a result of subdural hematoma that was caused by blunt force trauma as a result of child abuse.
Hiatt was facing up to 65 years in jail if convicted for murder. The murder charge was later dropped by Judge Thomas Webber (Pro Tempore). Hiatt entered the guilty plea of neglect of a dependent in exchange for a 30 year prison sentence.
This was not neglect. This was murder.
On May 13, 2023, Levi Hiatt will be eligible for the Community Transition Program. We cannot allow this monster to walk free.
Baby Comer was not just another victim. He was a beautiful baby boy with a bright future. He was my boy. He never had the chance to be a big brother, or drive a car, or live. His life was stolen and I will never be the same. My life and the lives of my family are forever changed because of the actions of Levi Hiatt.
