Justice for 400+ Animals Neglected at Villa Chardonnay Sanctuary in Julian, CA

The Issue

They were promised safety. Instead, they were left to suffer.

Over 400 animals — horses, cats, dogs, donkeys, alpacas, peacocks, and more — were seized from Villa Chardonnay, a self-described animal sanctuary near Julian, California, after investigators found evidence of starvation, injuries, and falsified records. The San Diego Humane Society called it the largest rescue operation in its eight-year history. Some animals needed urgent medical care. Others were simply trying to survive.

For 23 years, Villa Chardonnay presented itself as a place where abandoned and neglected animals could "live out their days in peace and comfort." Veterinary reports and inspection logs tell a very different story.

These animals had no voice. They couldn't call for help or walk away. They depended entirely on the humans who promised to care for them — and those humans failed them.

The San Diego Humane Society and its partners acted swiftly once they had legal authority to step in. Now it's time for the justice system to do the same. The individuals responsible for this neglect must be held fully accountable. And California must strengthen oversight of large animal sanctuaries so this never happens again.

Sign this petition to demand justice for the animals of Villa Chardonnay — and to make sure no sanctuary can hide abuse behind closed doors.
