Petition to Stop Lebanon From Selling Town Park Land to Developers for Townhouses
The Issue
BEFORE YOU READ MORE: Please Make sure to add your Lebanon Address, and the Lebanon Zip 06249 to make your signature official. THANK YOU.
The Town Of Lebanon wants to sell your most valuable land on the Green and convert what should be a public space into private land with Townhouses. If they're not stopped at the October Town Meeting, and the Sept 21st (7pm Town Hall) zoning Meeting, the Green will get carved-up and sold-off.
Lebanon residents lay claim to about 27 acres of the most beautiful wetlands with a pond, and meadows that have been preserved for centuries. The land is intended for the enjoyment of all residents, young and old. It is suited for a memorial park and walking track, wildlife preserve, farmer's market, athletic fields, playgrounds, and space for expansion of community center buildings. Not to be sold and paved-over for townhouses.
This sale of our land will lead to increased traffic congestion and degradation of the traffic patterns envisioned by the people that designed this town three centuries ago. Land that should be enjoyed by all will become private property that only contributes to the polluting of a delicate wetlands and spoiling of long-preserved fields. A few dozen people shouldn't trump the other 7400+ residents that deserve a community space on the Green.
The Lebanon Park, as I prefer to call it (until we memorialize it), is home to an otter (endangered species), foxes, lynx, deer, owls, hawks, and other flora and fauna. We should extend the walking track from the green and create a loop around our property. We should also consider inviting the Farmer's Market to the space. At the very least, the land should be saved for future use by the community.
If you support preserving this space for all residents, please support this cause.
If unopposed, the Selectman, Joyce Okonuk, will approve the sale of a parcel of our land for $100k to a private developer, who will build townhouses for 16 people. Then, they will push for even more townhouses, effectively tripling the population on West Town Street. Then, they will demand that Dr. Manning Drive be connected to the Sr. Center driveway, effectively creating a cut-through road on the green. This will cause a detrimental traffic flow pattern discordant with the original design of the Green. Imagine how many vehicles will race through this cut-through! Imagine what 50 more residents on this drive will do to the unspoiled beauty that you still own.
If you are one of the 7400+ residents that oppose townhouses on the green, and who won't benefit from this sale, please support our petition. If you would like a space for community, for a park, for preservation, and for events, then please support our petition.
Please also share this with every Lebanon resident you know, attend the September 21st zoning Meeting (7pm, Town Hall), and attend the VERY IMPORTANT October Town Meeting (TBA). Be sure to sign this petition and sign the official petition that will be distributed before the meetings. We need signatures, with names, and Lebanon addresses, to be valid.
