‘Everything will be okay.’
It was the writing on Kyal Sin’s t-shirt, a girl from Myanmar, when she was shot dead in her head demonstrating to resist the coup set by the Myanmar military.
The coup done by the military to the democratically-elected leaders in Myanmar has caused a humanitarian crisis. Internet access is cut, isolating the people in Myanmar.
The crisis itself has worsened. Repression done by the military has brought more victims. International press reported that at least 54 civilians were killed brutally by the military, including Kyal Sin.
The number of reported dead might be less than the actual number. Academicians in Myanmar also reported that more than 1500 people are being held, including lecturers and student activists.
We think that the lack of response from ASEAN countries to the military coup has contributed to the worsening situation in Myanmar. Instead of taking a serious and bold moral action, several ASEAN countries chose to deliver diplomatic rethorics. Indonesia and other countries are morally obligated to push ASEAN to take a bolder and better stance towards this issue.
We need to stand in solidarity with the young generation in Myanmar that have been taking a patriotic stance to uphold democracy, freedom and humanity for all people of Myanmar.
Indonesia and ASEAN countries should take a bold stance to avoid the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar continues, and to press the military junta to stop their repressive actions, in order to bring back democracy.
Hence, the United Nations and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) to take action that can stop the violence and this humanitarian crisis.
Through this petition, we demand President Joko Widodo, as the representative of the Indonesian government, to make a statement that condemns the coup done by the military junta in Myanmar, that clearly violates the values of democracy and human rights.
We also demand the United Nations and the AICHR to take bolder and more serious actions to protect and restore human rights in Myanmar.
Let’s sign this petition to stand in solidarity with the people in Myanmar.
This petition was initiated by KIKA (Indonesian Caucus for Academic Freedom) and SEPAHAM (Indonesian Human Rights Lecturer Union).
