Many Americans are not aware that Jean-Bertrand Aristide was democratically elected by the people of Haiti ... not once, but twice! In the 2000 election, Aristide received 92% of the vote. Four years later, President Aristide and his wife were forced into exile, removed from Haiti on a US military plane and released in Africa. Imagine the outrage if "representatives" from a foreign country came into the United States and forced our president to leave the country.

Since 2004, President Aristide's political party, Fanmi Lavalas, has been denied the right to participate in elections. Can you envision the Republican or Democratic parties being banned from a US election? International organizations and policies have consistently undermined Haitian democracy. The United Nations (MINUSTAH), along with the Organization of American States (OAS) maintain the exclusion of Fanmi Lavalas, Haiti's largest political party, from the election process and have blatantly refused to denounce the undemocratic removal of President Aristide.

How can President Aristide's return to Haiti be continually blocked, while we watch 'Baby Doc' Duvalier relax in Haiti without being convicted of his documented crimes against the Haitian people? Anybody, including US government officials, who believe in democracy, must speak up for the inclusion of Fanmi Lavalas in upcoming elections and for the unrestricted return of President Aristide.
