Khaleel Seivwright is working 7 days a week building mobile shelters for unhoused people.  These shelters are equipped with insulation, carbon dioxide and smoke detectors, a window, and a door with a lock.

The City of Toronto threatened to take legal action to remove the shelters from City property, and even went as far as to fine him for the removal of the buildings if they continue to appear. Since the ordering from the City to remove the shelters, Khaleel has been working with private property owners who are willing to house them on their grounds.  

While it is understood that the City of Toronto has it’s own regulations, guidelines and laws, the City should be open and willing to work in partnership with Khaleel to support this innovative solution to aid in the City’s housing and homelessness crisis.

The homeless crisis of Toronto is something we as humans need to address.  With less room in shelters and more men, women and children turning to the streets due to COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, we need a solution.

Toronto residents and NDP MPP Chris Glover are urging the province to declare a state of emergency on homelessness in Toronto.

In a time as fragile as this second lockdown, we need to find a solution to the housing crisis.
