"Paige's Law" Mandatory School Programs to raise awareness about suicide!

The Issue

"Paige's Law" for mandatory programs in our schools to raise awareness about suicide. Every school needs to have yearly presentations to educate our students, parents, and community members about suicide and mental illness. Every school needs to give students an item (message card, yellow ribbon, etc.) that they can hand to an adult if they need help, but don't know how to ask for it. (Paige's family made the card in the picture). Every school needs a program in place in the event that their students are touched by a suicide. The kids must be able to openly discuss their emotions without judgement! Paige Eryn Bird, a Baldwinsville, NY student, was given her wings too soon on March 21, 2016 when she took her own life at the age of 15. Her family and friends saw no signs that this tragedy was about to take place. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 12-18. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide a year than from cancer, heart disease, aids, birth defects, strokes, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease combined. Why would suicide education not be considered a top priority? Many people think that suicide is a stereo-typed thing. Suicide is not selective! Paige participated in her schools Color Guard program (which has its own extended family) and was well liked by her classmates. Paige had a family that meant the world to her. Paige was funny. Paige was a happy girl! Then one day Paige's brain had a disconnect and she died by suicide. We need our school districts to become pro-active in the battle against suicide. When people are educated about suicide and mental illness it will become easier to identify potential problems. It's time for this country to put mental health on the same level as physical health. Help light shine through the tragedy that Paige's family has suffered. No more stigma, no more ignoring a real problem, no more feeling alone. Please make "Paige's Law" to give our kids a voice!
