Myrtle Winchester started this petition to John Henry's Marina & Store

No one knows why the name, "John Henry's" was chosen for our local store and marina, but it's time for a change.

John Henry was a West Virginia black man, convict, and railroad worker in West Virginia, USA, who was immortalized by several folk songs and referenced in a number of movies and books. But, he never came to Pender Harbour, or even Canada, and it's unlikely he'd even heard of British Columbia.

But, Pender Harbour BC has it's own folk hero, "Black Bill" Gilkes, with First Nations rather than African American heritage, so that works better. Is our Black Bill worthy? Of course, he's beyond worthy! He is a calendar model, tireless and brave volunteer for our Fire Department, helps little old ladies across the street, and has been honoured by our local Residents Association, the local media, and countless Harbour Seals of Approval.

We appeal to the owners of John Henry's Marina & Store to re-name their establishment to reflect the 21st century, our local culture, and our pride in our community, because Chief Black Bill (fire chief) deserves this recognition.

Did John Henry ever buy your ice cream? We rest our case.
