Why this petition matters

Started by Cheyenne Harper

,I am 25, and engaged to be married. I recently found out that because I receive SSI due to my blindness, I will be required to start sending in my spouse’s pay stubs.

Meaning they will be reviewed to determine if I can still receive my benefits based on his income. If it’s determined that he makes too much money, my benefits get cutoff completely including my medical insurance. If he makes just under the cutoff limit, my benefits are cut in half; and I’m forced to pay back what I’ve previously received.

The reason this needs to change is because people with disabilities should be able to get married without the looming threat of losing their income, and medical insurance. Everyone loves to preach about how important marriage equality is, now it’s time to practice what we’ve been preaching. Extend that marriage equality to people with disabilities. We deserve that right just as much as able-bodied people.
