Don't demolish our suburb! Preserve the heritage and character of Hurlstone Park

The issue

This petition of residents of the Canterbury City Council raises concerns about the demolition of a post war period home to develop of six (6) town houses at 82 Floss Street, Hurlstone Park, New South Wales.

The proposed development is not  compatible with the character of the local area that is commonly low density, single dwelling homes built in the federation and post war periods.These homes have ample setback from boundaries and support gardens and plantings for trees and shrubs.

Canterbury planning documents describe the local area's character as:

"Older dwellings seen in most of Canterbury’s residential streets influence its residential identity and character."

"Canterbury’s residential streets have a green, leafy character created by:

  • Mature trees along street verges
  • Deep front setbacks that accommodate a variety of shrubs and some trees
  • Backyards that accommodate a variety of mature trees..."

We call on Canterbury City Council to reject this development as it is not compatible with the character of the local area on the following grounds;
1. Demolition of an existing period home to build 6 medium density town houses,
2. Set back controls are not within with minimum setback requirements on Dunstaffenage Street and the side boundary,
3. Over- development of the existing site by replacing the existing period home with 6 town houses,
4. Mature specimen street trees adjacent to the development are under threat of damage or removal.

We also ask that plans to create a heritage conservation zone in Hurlstone Park be fast tracked.
