Alteration to the Sustainability Firbank Uniform

Alteration to the Sustainability Firbank Uniform

The Issue

Firbank Grammar School recently launched its new sustainability uniform. A wonderful initiative. The environmental impact of the fashion industry is something that needs to be addressed and I applaud Firbank for taking the first steps in creating change.

However, the new uniforms that were presented were far from ideal. There is always a period of adjusting that comes with change BUT a school uniform should empower young girls and women. Make them feel confident, proud as well as be practical and comfortable so they can focus on their education and sport. A school that prides itself with raising future leaders has made a uniform reminiscent of wartime Europe. From its colour palate to the design it is not only impractical but unflattering. It is not the uniform of progressive leaders.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg said “Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes.” That “real change, enduring change happens one step at a time.” And so I am being the leader that the Firbank student body needs and asking for change. One step at a time.

I am formally requesting that the blazer, summer dress, long sleeve shirt, winter pleated skirt and sports tops be changed. They are the items that have had the most negative feedback for a variety of reasons and take away from the success of the other items.  A committee should be established and made up of students, parents and administrators across all 3 campuses to create the necessary adjustments. Working with the designer and pattern maker to ensure that the uniform is a success.

In the short time that the uniform was presented on social media, the negative response was overwhelming. So much so that it was taken down. I would like to change that. The uniforms and this initiative should have been applauded be the Firbank community and they will be. This is a chance for Firbank students and administrators to listen, respect each other and move forward. Working together to make an even stronger community of leaders.
