Not penalize NH fathers for participating. Pass NH HB 362 http://bit.ly/nhhb362
The Issue
EQUAL RIGHTS! Stop penalizing parents, particularly father, for trying to be part of their childrens lives. Pass NH HB 362. Include custody time in child support calculations.
Making child support fair based on parenting time. Encourage parents to work together to create a single stable financial situation for their familes. Most people assume it would be this way already, since it's fair and logical, they think that's the law. Unfortunately, the law is neither fair nor logical.
Currently, a single household pays 100% of child support based on mailing address and nothing else! I am a father of 3 who gave up a house and stable living situation so I could be an active Dad to my kids. I chose to live in a small apartment and struggle to make ends meet so I can be a father 50+% of the time and see my kids regularly.
CURRENT LAWS:
- Assumptions:
- Mother 30k/year | Father 50k/year
- Father pays 20k (40%) regardless of custody time.
IF HB 362 is passed, the calculation would be based on both incomes and use custody time as a factor. The above 20k would be reduced to 10k with 50% custody, but still 20k with 0% custody, making both households 40k households.
Right now it is an economic burden for a divorced father to parent his children, this is insane.
Our current laws give all support to one parent, regardless of time and money spent parenting. I pay the same amount of support as though I never have my children, even though I had them over 75% of May 2019. For me personally, this is worth the cost, as being a father is my identity. But in general, these outdated laws encourage fathers to not participate in their childrens' lives, as its a financial strain to do so. After paying child support ( for living expenses) They turn around and pay living expenses.
This should not be a partisan bill, this shouldn't even be questioned. The goal of child support should be to create a balanced financial lifestyle for the children so they can live their best life possible with both parents involved in their lives. Anything less in not only sexist, but an injustice to the children.
Please, if you are a father, or someone who loves children, or believes in equality. Sign this petition, and encourage NH representatives to promote fairness in our child support laws. Encourage men to be participating fathers, and not punish them financially for trying to be involved in their childrens' lives.
