The city council has approved a new playground at J.P. Moseley Park, yet did not include any known shade in the proposal nor the approved playground. Let's change that together.
My son plays on the existing playground nearly every day, but during the summer months, the equipment becomes unbearably hot. Even with extra care, including sunscreen, he recently got burned while playing. This painful experience and constant worry about his safety are why I am urging for a shade to be placed over the new play structures.
Building a new playground is a fantastic initiative for the community, and it is essential to ensure it's a safe space for all children and even adults. Without adequate shade, the playground's surface temperature can rise to dangerous levels during the peak of summer, causing not just discomfort but serious health concerns such as heat burns or heat stroke.
Studies show that shading can lower surface temperatures significantly and improve the usability of play areas during hot weather. Over 13% of playground injuries are heat-related when safety measures, like shading, aren't implemented.
The addition of sun shelters or shade sails over play structures would allow children to play safely year-round without the threat of excessive sun exposure. We can provide a safer environment conducive to fitness, fun, and creativity for children.
It's crucial to act now to ensure our children's safety and well-being while they enjoy their playtime. I urge you to support this initiative in making our playgrounds a safer place for all kids. Your signature can help make a significant impact and push this proposal forward. Sign this petition and advocate for a safer play environment for all our children.
Thank you for your time.
